Alert: scammers impersonating Vietcombank employees to steal customer information

22/05/2025 10:01

Recently, there has been a growing number of scams in which fraudsters impersonate Vietcombank employees or call centre agents to contact customers and offer to issue credit cards.

Common scam tactics

Scammers pretend to be Vietcombank staff and contact customers via phone calls or messages (SMS, Zalo, Messenger, etc.), persuading them to open a virtual debit card or apply for a credit card. Some reported scam phone numbers include: 02366888766, 02488860469, 02888865154, 1900355561…

In some cases, customers receive automated calls with a fake message claiming:
"Congratulations! You are eligible to receive a credit card from our bank. To proceed, press 1, or press 0 to speak to a representative."
If the customer presses a number, the scammer hangs up and then calls back, posing as a bank employee to trick the customer into revealing personal and banking information.

Fraudsters often ask customers to apply for a debit card and share the card details. These details are then used to link the card to e-wallets controlled by the scammers, or for online purchases of high-value items (like iPhones, MacBooks, etc.), leading to theft of funds from the customer’s account. They typically ask for: a photo of the card, card number, name on the card, full card number as displayed in the VCB Digibank app and OTP codes….

Scammers may also ask for account numbers, personal information (such as National ID, biometric data), or confidential banking details (like passwords or OTPs) to gain unauthorised access to the customer's bank account and steal funds.

Another trick involves convincing customers to transfer money to the scammer’s account or another third-party account under the pretense of “increasing your credit score to qualify for a credit card.” They may also ask for upfront payments for “application processing fees” or “card issuance fees.”
